About Whinney Hill landfill site

A spokesperson for SUEZ recycling and recovery UK said, “Whinney Hill landfill site has been in operation since the 1970's and provides an essential service, managing primarily household waste from across Lancashire.

“Lancashire is home to one of the largest seagull colonies in Europe, including the protected species of lesser black-backed gulls. We are a responsible operator and recognise the inconvenience the birds can cause the local community when they are here. As such, we have been under advice from Natural England as to the most effective techniques to prevent the gulls from feeding on site, including the use of falconry , gas cannons, lasers and shoot to scare measures – none of which have had the full impact of changing the behaviour of the gulls.

“We have now been advised and authorised by Natural England to use a strictly controlled and proportionate population control measure which will, we hope, have a long term effective in deterring the seagulls from the area.”

Community liaison group

We host a quarterly community liaison group which is an opportunity to hear about the operations at Whinney Hill, as well as to provide a transparent forum to raise any concerns on behalf of the local community.

The group includes councillors and council representatives, as well as the Environment Agency and local residents.

Residents, local representatives and businesses are welcome to join the group - if you are interested, please contact us using the below link.
