Recycling and recovery

Campground waste transfer station

At approximately 02:30 on Sunday morning (28 February 2021), we were alerted to the presence of a fire in the main general refuse processing building at our Campground waste transfer station on Springwell Road in Wrekenton, Gateshead.

The building contains non-hazardous general household waste collected from recycling centres over the weekend.

The fire service attended site within 10 minutes and the fire has now been extinguished.

The Main transfer station however will remain closed. All vehicle deliveries to the site are being rerouted and there will be no disruption to household waste collections as a result of the incident.

The adjacent Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) remains unaffected by the above and will reopen this morning under normal operating times as indicated on the website.

We urge our customers to only use the facility for essential journeys only.

We would like to thank Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service and colleagues at Gateshead Council, Sunderland City Council and the Environment Agency for their support in managing the fire and we apologise for the disruption to our neighbours and the local community.
