Giving something back

SUEZ proud to support Seghill Gala 2026

SUEZ was delighted to once again support the historic Seghill Community Gala on Saturday 6 June, joining residents and local organisations for a day of celebration, tradition and community spirit.

Held annually on the first Saturday in June since 1911, Seghill Gala is one of the few remaining miners’ galas in the country. The event continues to honour the village’s rich mining heritage while bringing the community together through much-loved traditions, including a vibrant parade through the village, a funfair and the ever-popular children’s “treats”.

This year’s gala featured a packed programme of entertainment for all ages. Visitors enjoyed live music from talented local performers, including a school choir, alongside children’s races, competitions, fairground rides and a wide variety of stalls and attractions. The gala continues to evolve each year, with new elements added to ensure there is something for everyone to enjoy.

A highlight of the day was the colourful parade, where SUEZ joined partners W.L. Straughan & Son Ltd to take part in the procession through the village. The SUEZ team embraced the occasion by dressing as bees and sunflowers, drawing smiles from the crowds while promoting the ongoing sunflower project in support of The Alnwick Garden.

Delivered in partnership with The Alnwick Garden and W.L. Straughan & Son Ltd, the sunflower project has already seen thousands of seeds and growing packs distributed to local schools and community groups. The initiative encourages environmental awareness, community participation and supports the charitable work of The Alnwick Garden.

The project will culminate in a Sunflower Finale Fun Day later this summer at Seghill Restored Landfill, Cramlington, Northumberland, NE23 7DY on Saturday 29 August 2026, 11:00am to 4:00pm.

The event will celebrate 25 years of The Alnwick Garden while raising vital funds for its charity, community education and wellbeing programmes.

Visitors can look forward to:

  • Picking their own sunflower
  • Free children’s crafts and games
  • A free bouncy castle
  • Nature-based activities
  • Food vendors and small business stalls
  • Live music
  • Tombola and raffle prizes
  • Pre-loved item sales

Guests will also be able to enjoy a spectacular display of sunflowers in full bloom along the pathway leading to the restored nature trail at Seghill Landfill.

Victoria Pritchard, Regional Manager at SUEZ, said: "We are proud to support the Seghill Gala once again. It’s a fantastic event with such a strong sense of history and community spirit. We had a great time taking part in the parade this year and promoting the sunflower project, which has already had a great response from local schools and groups."

A spokesperson from the Seghill Gala Committee, added: "Seghill Gala is a cherished tradition in our village, and we are committed to keeping its history alive while continuing to grow the event each year. We’re incredibly grateful to SUEZ for their continued support, which helps us deliver a day that brings the whole community together."
