New Bridge of Don site recycles almost 800 tonnes more as Recycle Week gets underway
The new HWRC at Claymore Drive, operated by SUEZ on behalf of Aberdeen City Council, has handled 3,180 tonnes of material during its 10 full months of operations, achieving a recycling rate of 67.4%.
By comparison, the former Scotstown Road site, handled 2,400 tonnes during its final 12 full months, with a recycling rate of 56.6%.
That represents an increase of 11% in the recycling rate, with around 785 tonnes more material recycled at Bridge of Don already – equivalent to round 60 double decker buses - despite the new HWRC having two months still to run before a 12-month comparison can be made.
The figures show the impact of the larger and more modern facility, which replaced the former Scotstown Road site. Bridge of Don was designed to provide more space, improved accessibility and the ability to collect a wider range of materials for recycling.
The results are being highlighted during Recycle Week, which runs from 14 – 20 September, encouraging households across the UK to recognise the value of the materials they use and recycle more of the things that might otherwise end up in the bin.
Richard Hinchliffe, Regional Manager at SUEZ, said: “The performance of the new Bridge of Don is really encouraging. In just its first 10 full months it has handled considerably more material than the old Scotstown Road did over 12 months, while increasing the amount being recycled from 56.6% to 67.4%."

Reuse continues to play an increasingly important role in Aberdeen, with Reuse Shops now located at both Bridge of Don and Hazlehead HWRCs. In 2025 alone, more than 31,000 items were diverted from disposal, while the Hazlehead Reuse Shop has sold more than 104,000 items since opening. The income generated also supports the annual Aberdeen Reuse Community Fund, which provides grants to local environmental, wellbeing and community projects.

The new Bridge of Don Recycling Centre replaced the former Scotstown Road facility and can accept materials including carpets, chemicals, rubble, soil, paint, tyres and vapes which previously couldn’t be accepted. Residents can visit the site at Claymore Dr, Bridge of Don, Aberdeen AB23 8GD.
