SUEZ expands Milton Keynes partnership with waste recovery park contract
The contract builds on SUEZ’s successful delivery of household waste collection and street cleansing services for MKCC, which commenced in September 2023, and reinforces the company’s commitment to delivering integrated, sustainable waste management solutions across the city.
The Waste Recovery Park is a key piece of regional infrastructure, treating up to 132,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste each year from Milton Keynes and West Northamptonshire. The facility also generates enough energy to power the equivalent of around 10% of homes in Milton Keynes, helping to reduce reliance on landfill while supporting local energy generation.
As part of the transition, employees working at the facility will transfer to SUEZ under TUPE arrangements.
Tim Otley, Chief Operating Officer for Energy at SUEZ visited the site on the first day of operations and said “The addition of the Milton Keynes Waste Recovery Park enhances SUEZ’s ability to provide a fully integrated waste management service for Milton Keynes, create opportunities to increase operational efficiencies, improve performance and deliver even greater value for residents and the council.”
Since taking over the city’s household collections and street cleansing services in 2023, SUEZ has collected more than 98,000 tonnes of waste annually and has supported significant improvements in recycling performance. Milton Keynes is now recognised as England’s leading city for recycling, reflecting the success of a strong partnership.
Councillor Jennifer Wilson-Marklew, Cabinet Member for Sustainability said, “The Waste Recovery Park plays a vital role in managing Milton Keynes’ waste, helping us divert almost all of it from landfill while generating sustainable energy for the city. SUEZ has helped Milton Keynes become England’s number one recycling city, and this contract builds on that successful partnership. Together, we’ll continue delivering efficient, innovative, and environmentally responsible services that provide excellent value for residents.”
