35 Under 35: Hannah Elliott, Assistant Planning Manager, Planning
SUEZ recycling and recovery UK celebrates six of our emerging leaders named among the 2025 ’35 Under 35’ winners announced at the Resource and Waste Management Expo recently.
Over the next two weeks, we’re spotlighting each of our six 35 Under 35 winners (Dominic Cullip, Georgeeana Chinnock, Hannah Elliott, Jack Bishop, Joe Robery and Tadelayo Sodipe), sharing their stories and reflections in their own words as part of the next generation of leaders advocating for sustainable resources across the sector.
Hannah Elliott joined SUEZ three and a half years ago and has been making a big difference that her efforts and skills did not go unrecognised. She takes initiative, values clear communication and is very passionate about the environment and the circular economy.
“It’s so exciting to be recognised in the ’35 Under 35’ awards. It brings to the fore the future of the industry and highlights the passion we have in wanting to make it better. I feel very proud to have received this award,” says Hannah.
Here are some of Hannah’s insights and experiences:
On the job
I work within the planning team helping sites across the business secure planning permissions for any development they need. This can range from a small portacabin or extended operating hours on an existing site to a whole new facility for the business. I spend my days preparing applications, visiting SUEZ sites or reviewing local plans and policies.
How it all began
I have always had a passion for the environment and sustainability. I went to university and studied Physical Geography and then took some time to decide where I wanted my career to go. I always wanted to work in a company that makes a difference and has strong sustainability goals and credentials. SUEZ seemed the perfect fit.
Purpose and motivation
It’s very satisfying seeing the work I’ve done help shape the future of the business. There are lots of different departments that come together over a project’s lifespan, from inception to commission, and it’s great to see it all come together.
Proud moments
A key project I really enjoyed was the redevelopment of one of our sites in the north of Scotland. Although it was a replacement build, the planning process required a full new application, which made it particularly challenging. I wanted to make sure the site had a solid planting design that could thrive in coastal conditions and improve local biodiversity. To give it the best chance of success, I took the initiative to carry out soil sampling so we could create a tailored planting plan suited to the site. Seeing that design now take hold has been very rewarding.
Overcoming challenges
Communication is key! It’s so important to have good communication between different departments within SUEZ, as well as external bodies such as local authorities and consultancies. Having good communication makes for an easier and more enjoyable project overall.
Moving the industry forward
We need as many people as possible who are excited about the future and want to help shape it into an exciting place. These are people who will try something new to try and create something better than what currently exists.
Words of advice
Get involved in as many different things as possible. It’s so interesting to see and learn about new processes and technologies. Plus, you get to meet so many different people.
