The waste is over as new recycling centre opens

Council leaders, alongside recycling partners SUEZ recycling and recovery UK, cut the ribbon to formally open a new recycling centre at Claymore Drive, in Bridge of Don today.

The new facility replaces the old recycling centre on Scotstown Road, providing improved access for visitors, an improved layout, and accepting a wider range of recyclables, matching the service provided at Hazlehead Recycling Centre.

Michelle Ross, a local resident, arrived just as the gates were closing for the last time at Scotstown Road. On hearing about the new facility at Claymore Drive, she said “I’m so pleased that more of my items will be recycled and to have the option for reuse too is brilliant. I’m looking forward to my next visit!”

Aberdeen City Council co-leader Councillor Ian Yuill said: “The facility expands on the recyclables we can collect for residents, making it easier for them to recycle and helping us waste less by keeping things in use for longer.

“We’ve already seen a fantastic response from residents making use of the new facility, and I’m looking forward to the opening of a second Reuse Shop early in 2026 at the site to match the success of the Hazlehead shop.”

Net Zero, Environment and Transport Vice-convenor Councillor Miranda added: “It’s great to see the improved recycling centre opened to the public. The new layout makes the site a much more welcoming environment for residents to visit, with safer access and walk-ins available.

“The SUEZ staff are always ready to give help and advice to residents visiting the site, and it’s great to see the positive reaction we’ve had from visitors since the site first opened its gates a few weeks ago.”

John Scanlon, Chief Executive of SUEZ recycling and recovery UK said, “We’re immensely proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish over the last 25 years through our close working relationship with Aberdeen City Council.

“The recycling centre at Scotstown Road has always been a popular site for residents in the north of the city but we’re very happy that the new Bridge of Don site will not only help improve the number of items that can now be recycled and reused, but also offer modern facilities for our team as well. I look forward to continuing our collaborative partnership to the benefit of Aberdeen’s residents.”

Items now accepted at Bridge of Don that weren’t previously include carpet; ceramics; rubble; soil and turf; paint; household chemicals; tyres; and vapes.

A new Reuse Shop is planned to open onsite, helping to expand the city’s reuse facilities and contributing to a circular economy by keeping good quality pre-loved items, delivered to our recycling centres, in use for longer.

Recycling centres in Aberdeen are open to city residents, bringing household waste, only. Proof of residency is needed to gain access.
