SUEZ hits £600,000 milestone in support of Greater Manchester Mayor’s Charity as latest £100,000 donation boosts homelessness prevention
Local waste and recycling company SUEZ has announced a new donation of £100,000 to the Greater Manchester Mayor’s Charity, bringing its total contribution to the charity to an incredible £600,000.
The funds are generated through the innovative and award-winning Renew project, a circular economy initiative that transforms household waste into a powerful force for social good. Items donated by Greater Manchester residents at local recycling centres are sent to the Renew Hub in Trafford Park. There, the items are checked, cleaned, and often upcycled by a dedicated team before being sold back into the community via three Renew shops and an online shop and eBay store.
The scale of the project's environmental impact is significant; last year alone, over 135,000 items were saved from becoming waste, ranging from furniture and white goods to sports equipment and household items.
This latest £100,000 instalment will directly support the Greater Manchester Mayor’s Charity’s mission to end homelessness. This includes the flagship A Bed Every Night programme, which provides emergency accommodation and wrap-around support for those at risk of sleeping rough.
The donation comes at an important time for the Charity, with recently appointed Anne Rhind as its new Chief Executive Officer. The Charity is renewing its focus on the prevention of homelessness and rough sleeping, aiming to intervene before individuals and families reach a point of crisis.
Claire Williams, Renew Manager at SUEZ said: “We are incredibly proud to see the items donated by Greater Manchester residents being transformed into life-changing support for the city-region’s most vulnerable. Reaching the £600,000 milestone for the Greater Manchester Mayor’s Charity is a huge achievement for the whole team.”
Anne Rhind, CEO of Greater Manchester Mayor’s Charity, added: “The support that the Renew Hub and SUEZ provide is crucial to help us tackle social issues across Greater Manchester. Their donation means the charity has an operational team actively working to support organisations delivering services to our communities throughout the city-region.”
The work at the Renew Hub is a cornerstone of SUEZ’s wider commitment to delivering social value within the region as part of the Greater Manchester Combined Authority waste contracts. Beyond raising vital funds through Renew, SUEZ supports local employment, including the recruitment of apprentices and providing green jobs. SUEZ’s social value work in Greater Manchester further extends to enhancing local biodiversity and engaging with schools to support careers events and environmental education.
