SUEZ celebrates one year of reuse with Havens Hospices in Southend
SUEZ and Havens Hospices are proud to celebrate the first anniversary of the Reuse Shop at Stock Road Household Waste Recycling Centre, highlighting a successful year of advancing the circular economy, reducing waste, and supporting vital local hospice services through a strong partnership approach.
James Gatter, SUEZ Southend Contract Manager, said: ‘This is an excellent example of effective partnership working with residents, the City Council, and Havens Hospices. The funds generated from items diverted from waste to reuse are making a meaningful difference to those who rely on Havens Hospices’ support. At the same time, this initiative benefits the environment and the local economy, creating a lasting positive impact for the people of Southend.
The innovative Havens Hospices Reuse Shop, operated in collaboration with SUEZ and Southend-on-Sea City Council, has demonstrated how reuse can play a central role in sustainable waste management. Thousands of pre-loved items have been given a second life, with the initiative diverting over 48 tonnes of goods from waste while generating essential funding for hospice care across Essex.
Over the past year, the sales from the shop have funded an extraordinary 1,750 hours of specialist care provided by Havens Hospices. This includes respite care, emergency support, and end-of-life care delivered by experienced nursing teams at Fair Havens and Little Havens.
Alan Richards, Executive Director for Environment and Place at Southend City Council, added:
“We’re incredibly proud to see the impact the Reuse shop has made over the past year. It’s a fantastic example of how simple, everyday actions like donating or buying pre-loved items can have a lasting impact on both the environment and our community. By working in partnership with Havens Hospices and SUEZ, we’re not only reducing waste and supporting our carbon impact but also helping to fund vital care for local people. It’s a brilliant initiative and we’re excited to see it continue to grow.”
The Havens Hospices Reuse Shop is a practical example of commitment to the circular economy - keeping valuable materials in use for longer, reducing reliance on disposal, and delivering social value within the community.
Conveniently located at the Recycling Centre, the shop makes reuse accessible and easy. Residents visiting the site can donate unwanted items in good condition or browse a wide range of affordable goods, from homeware to sports equipment - supporting both sustainability and a local charity with every transaction.
Mark Davis, Head of Trading at Havens Hospices, said: “We are incredibly proud to be celebrating one year of our Stock Road Reuse shop. This project has shown how small actions - like donating or buying pre-loved items - can make a big difference. Not only are we helping to reduce waste and support the environment, but every purchase also helps fund our specialist care for children, young people and adults living with incurable conditions across Essex.”
“Thanks to our partners at SUEZ and Southend-on-Sea City Council, we’ve created a space that brings together sustainability and community support in a really meaningful way.”
