North Tyneside Council awards major new waste management contract to SUEZ

North Tyneside Council has appointed SUEZ in the UK to deliver waste management services across the borough under a major new long-term contract.

The agreement, due to begin in 2027, will see SUEZ continue to manage the Council's waste transfer station and Household Waste Recycling Centre, as well as the treatment of residual waste and selected recyclable materials.

The renewed partnership with SUEZ will support North Tyneside’s progress towards a circular economy, with a focus on re-use in the form of its Renew initiative which sees items removed from the waste-stream to be cleaned, fixed and sold back into the local economy. In its first three months, Renew North Tyneside sold 30,000 affordable items to members of the community.

The initial contract period will run for 10 years, with the option to extend for a further decade, providing long-term certainty for residents while supporting the Council's environmental ambitions.

The award follows a comprehensive procurement process and is one of the Council's most significant contracts in recent years.

North Tyneside Council manages almost 100,000 tonnes of waste and recyclables every year, including household rubbish, recycling and garden waste collected from homes across the borough, as well as materials brought to the Household Waste Recycling Centre.

Under the new agreement, SUEZ will be responsible for:

  • The transfer and treatment of residual household waste and recycling.
  • Operating and managing the Council's waste transfer station.
  • Operating and managing the Household Waste Recycling Centre.
  • The transfer and treatment of garden waste.
  • Supporting the ongoing development of services that prioritise waste prevention, reuse and recycling including Renew.

The contract has been designed to ensure services can adapt to future changes in legislation, technology and environmental requirements, while continuing to deliver value for money for residents.

Councillor Willie Samuel, Cabinet Member for Environmental Sustainability at North Tyneside Council, said: "This contract secures the future of waste management services in North Tyneside and provides a strong platform for improving environmental outcomes across the borough.

"It reflects our commitment to delivering value for money while ensuring residents continue to receive reliable and high-quality waste services."

Steve Patterson, Managing Director – North at SUEZ, said: "We are delighted to have agreed a new contract with our long-standing partners at North Tyneside Council and to continue supporting residents with essential waste and recycling services across the borough.

“We look forward to continuing to work closely with the Council to support its environmental ambitions, helping increase recycling rates, and re-use opportunities through Renew North Tyneside, while delivering high-quality services for the community over the years ahead."

The renewed partnership will support the safe, efficient and compliant management of waste across North Tyneside while helping the Council progress its wider environmental and social value objectives.
