The mission
To improve how waste is managed on site
Army Foundation College, located in Harrogate in north-east England, is a key training facility for young military personnel. It produces diverse waste streams, including general waste, dry mixed recycling, food waste, wood, cardboard, metals, waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) and hazardous waste. SUEZ, together with Compass Group, which provides catering and cleaning services at the site, worked to update AFC’s waste system and introduce reliable recycling routes.
Previously, the site faced significant several challenges, including the absence of a dry mixed recycling waste stream and inefficient food waste management. Its recycling rate was a mere 7.2% when the improvement plan began in 2023.
Our solutions
Introduction of more efficient waste separation
We made recycling easier by simplifying processes and improving efficiency. A key step was ensuring waste could be easily and correctly segregated at the source. Collection points were reviewed so the staff could separate materials correctly without slowing down daily routines.
Bins were also upgraded, ensuring that general waste, dry mixed recycling and food waste were captured separately. A food waste collection service ensured organic material was diverted from general waste, which reduced contamination, and treated more sustainably.
By focusing on these core improvements, we created a more efficient system that aligned with the site’s operational needs and environmental goals.
The result
Significant increase in recycling rates
The improvements delivered significant results. Recycling increased from 7.2% to 40.7% within the first six months since the implementation of the new system in 2023, showing a large rise in the amount of material diverted from general waste. The cleaning staff reported that the improvement was much simpler and day-to-day operations ran more smoothly. AFC also saw a reduction in general waste disposal cost and increased recycling efficiency.
The project highlights how practical changes to a waste system can deliver environmental and financial benefits for large sites with complex routines. This is further proof of the positive impact and importance of having effective waste management practices firmly anchored on sustainable measures and circular economy mindset.
The team from SUEZ was very helpful from start to finish on the recycling project here at the AFC, from visiting the site to scoping all our requirements to assist in helping achieve an increase in our recycling rates across the site.Suzanne Horsfall , Soft Services Manager | Compass Contract Services
