The mission
Restore the school’s unused area into a flourishing natural habitat
During a routine visit to support Clanfield Junior School with Simpler Recycling reforms as part of our contract with Hampshire County Council, we saw potential far beyond bins and waste signages. We recognised an opportunity to help revitalise the school’s substantial, yet underused, outdoor areas. Headteacher Kati Dawkins was already rallying volunteers to revive the outdoor area for the benefit of over 300 pupils. As we are committed to supporting communities in enhancing biodiversity and promoting social value, we proactively supported the school in helping restore the space back to nature.
Our solution
Close collaboration to bring back natural habitats and create learning spaces
With a few donated pallets and some imagination, a plan emerged: birdboxes. Beyond being a safe haven for wildlife, they could spark curiosity and connection for the children, turning forgotten corners of the school grounds into living classrooms.
To bring these creative ideas to life, we collaborated with the Fareham Workshop team to build the birdboxes. They generously gave their time and tools to precision-cut, drill and assemble the boxes safely, ensuring that they’re sturdy and suitable for their intended purpose.
The results
Successful installation of birdboxes, enhanced biodiversity and a new haven for children and wildlife
A total of 11 bird boxes were built, one for each class, so every pupil could take part in personalising and installing a box in the school grounds. The pupils had a great time painting, filling in and hanging these birdboxes around their designated spaces. These simple wooden homes are now a shared focal point for wildlife observation, learning and relaxation, all of which nurture early awareness of biodiversity.
This project is one small but meaningful way we are putting our commitment to the people and planet into action. After all, we at SUEZ are all about supporting environmental education, enhancing biodiversity and investing in the wellbeing of our communities.
