The mission

To revive an abandoned eco garden into a safe, engaging space for children and wildlife

Steep Primary School, under the Hampshire County Council contract, had an eco garden that once buzzed with life – birds, insects, small mammals and, most importantly, curious young learners. But over time, it had become overgrown and unmanageable, full of brambles and dense shrubs that made it unsafe for pupils. The garden had also stopped supporting the wildlife it once attracted. The school wanted to revive it – but it didn’t have the time or resources to do so alone. That’s where we stepped in.

Our solution

A volunteer-powered refresh that cleared the way for nature and learning to return

Four SUEZ team members from our South East sub-contracting group volunteered their time to support the school. Across a single day, or a total of 16 hours, they worked to clear the thick undergrowth, cut back brambles and open up the space again. No heavy machinery was needed; it was all done by hand, using tools and teamwork to get the garden back into shape. The focus was on safety, usability and making the space more welcoming again for both children, staff and the local wildlife.

The results

A safer, cleaner outdoor space ready to be used by 99 pupils and staff

The garden had been fully cleared and made safe for use, and the team had restored its potential as a learning space. Staff can now confidently bring classes into the garden and nature has a more inviting environment to return to. The feedback from the school was immediate and positive – they were thrilled to see progress so quickly. This small act of support created a space that benefits 99 students as well as staff, encouraging outdoor learning and appreciation for biodiversity.

I just wanted to say a big thank you for starting the ball rolling with the volunteers in the garden. It looks great! They have taken up so many brambles. It’s much appreciated, thanks!
