SUEZ celebrates 10 years of support for Macmillan Cancer Support

Macmillan Cancer Support provides essential financial, practical and emotional support to people living with cancer, as well as advocating for better cancer care. They are 98% funded by voluntary donations, so the fundraising we contribute helps to ensure they can continue to deliver the vital support people living with cancer need.

Our original aim when we started the partnership in 2013 was to raise £250,000 for Macmillan. We achieved this goal within five years and now, at the 10-year anniversary of our partnership, we have raised over £550,000!

During that time, we have joined together with colleagues to take part in different challenges and events to fundraise for this great cause. These have ranged from local bake sales and beach cleans to our company-wide ‘big event’ challenges, which we hold every other year.

The Big Ride (2014)

The Big Ride started at Stoneyhill in Scotland and finished at St Erth in Cornwall. We cycled over 2,400 miles across 31 days, visiting over 100 of our UK sites.

Rio Roadshow (2016)

We challenged our employees to run, row and ride the distance between London and Rio de Janeiro (over 5,700 miles) on exercise equipment ahead of the 2016 Olympics.

The Big Walk (2018)

In June 2018, we challenged our employees, families, friends and suppliers to collectively walk 357,000km - one kilometre for each person that was diagnosed with cancer per year as of 2018.

The Big Climb (2021)

The Big Climb was all about clocking up as much elevation as possible throughout June, July and August. Together we climbed over 1,900,000m.

The Big 10 at 10 (2023)

Celebrating 10 years of partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support, colleagues took on challenges to raise £101010 (or £10-10-10 as we like to say it) by the end of 2023. This included members of our management team cycling from our UK head office in Maidenhead to the SUEZ Group HQ in Paris.

John Scanlon, Chief Executive Officer for SUEZ recycling and recovery UK said: “We’re incredibly proud of our partnership with Macmillan which has seen our teams raise over £550k in ten years. The sad reality is that many of us will be touched by cancer in some way at some point in our lives, so we’re pleased that the funds raised by SUEZ help Macmillan provide vital practical, emotional and financial support to people living with cancer in the UK.”

Gemma Peters, Chief Executive Officer Macmillan Cancer Support said: “We are so grateful for our partnership with SUEZ recycling and recovery UK which has raised an incredible £550,000 over the past 10 years. This amount has helped Macmillan Cancer Support continue to deliver essential emotional, practical and financial support to people living with cancer. We are so excited to see what more we can achieve as we continue our partnership in 2024.”

Thank you to our many suppliers who have supporting us by donating to these events.
