The mission

To develop a cost effective, compliant and robust waste management solutions while meeting all site requirements

Home to key naval assets, the site required a system that improved waste segregation, increased recycling rates and aligned with strict Ministry of Defence security protocols. The facility generates a diverse range of waste, ranging from dry mixed recycling (DMR) and international catering waste to general and bulky waste. The existing system required frequent vehicle movements, had inefficient waste containment and lacked flexibility to respond to evolving needs. SUEZ offered a solution that would enhance operational efficiency while minimising environmental impact and costs.

Our solution

Effective, innovative solutions that enabled improvement and operational sustainability

SUEZ conducted a comprehensive audit to assess all factors that led to a series of strategic improvements on the facility’s waste management system. We optimised collection and containment, including the removal of underutilised front-end loader (FEL) containers.

For overall impact on efficiency and sustainability, we significantly reduced skip movements in order to cut costs and reduce carbon emissions. Using specialised equipment, we ensured rapid response to waste management challenges while meeting strict security requirements. We also enhanced flexibility and security through our team’s on-site expertise. We followed rigorous vetting processes to comply with naval security protocols.

The results

100% increased recycling, significant cost savings and huge drop in CO2 footprint

One year after implementation, SUEZ reported over 100% increase in DMR levels and approximately £56,000 annual cost savings. We also noted an estimated 1,000kg monthly CO2 reduction.

Beyond these achievements, enhanced data collection and improved service reliability have provided greater agility in managing waste streams. As part of the ongoing improvements, the site is set to benefit further from SUEZ’s commitment to Simpler Recycling reforms.

We are looking at further improving skip collections and on-site segregations using advanced technology especially in efficient bin monitoring – all aimed at reducing costs, vehicle movement and environmental impact.
